Can anyone assist, please.

XP offers the opportunity to switch users without having to log off, with
programs still running.
About 6 months ago, I experienced a crash
Since then attempting to log in as a 2nd user using the "switch user"
function causes windows to crash, we have to log off first.
Does anyone have a possible cure for this?

I have the exact same problem. So I tried your suggestion of using Task
Manager but it was no help. The system actually crashes at the point
when I click on the second user (on the user selection screen) when
another user is already logged in. Any other suggestions?

Six months ago something changed - an updated driver, updated software -or-
new drivers, new software. Whatever it was that changed (possibly more than
one item), it is not compatible with fast user switching. Fast user
switching will not work unless drivers and software are compatible.

You need drivers for hardware to work correctly and efficiently. If this is
due to a driver update/new driver, then your choice is to rollback to the
old driver (forfeiting any benefits the new driver provides) -or - giving
up fast user switching and keeping the better driver. NOTE: Over time, it's
very possible that another update to the same driver would fix the problem
with fast user switching.

If this is due to updated or new software that is allowed to run at
startup, you can use "msconfig" to pinpoint which startup program. Clicking
Start> Run and typing msconfig into the run box and clicking okay will
start the System Configuration tool. On the startup page, uncheck any
program that is not absolutely necessary. Click OK. Approve the restart and
then try fast user switching (FUS) to see if the problem persists.

If FUS is working okay, start adding one startup item at a time. Restart
and test with each addition. When the problem reappears, the last startup
item enabled is at fault. You'll want to end or close this program before
using FUS.

The other possibility with software is that the program is not a startup
program but one that is open whenever you attempt FUS. You'll need to
compose a list of the programs that are open when you run into this
problem. Then through trial and error, pinpoint the one that is at fault.
Make a point to close it before invoking FUS.

As with drivers, future program updates could possibly resolve the FUS
problem.

Zone Labs reported this was an issue with one of their versions, although it
does not mean that it's the cause in every case. But, it was for mine. I
did recently update to the newest version, and now FUS works.
The current version is: ZoneAlarm 6.0.667.000
