Right now I have two windows 2000 servers. One is a PDC
and one is a file server. We have to replace the PDC with
another server that is going to be a citrix server. is
there any way to transfer the active directory from one
server to the other, or do I just have to just run dcpromo
on the file server and set active directory up again?

Thank you

Hello!

Yes that is the right way,

1. run the DCPROMO on the file server, make sure you move Global Catalog
Server to the new server also, all FMSO roles like, PDC, Infrastructure
Master, Domain Naming Master, RID etc are automatical moved in next step

2. on your current PDC/DC/AD, that gonna be Citrix Server, run DCPROMO and
the wizard will allow you to demote AD from that server, after an restart
that server is a common members server, and as i said there is no need to
transfer any FSMO role manuelly

Hi its me again, that sounds good, but one question: when
you say move the global catalog server, how exactlly do I
go about doing that?

thank you again

Are you saying that after moving the Global Catalog to
the new W2K AD server you can simply run dcpromo on the
first box and all FSMO roles will be moved over
automatically to this 2nd box which is the only other AD
domain controller left in the domain?

I thought you have to manually move the FSMO roles before
running dcpromo on the original domain controller,
otherwise those roles get lost and then you have to seize
them using ndsutil.exe

Just checking, since I am preparing to do this same
overall process in a few days, and I have differing
detail from another post.

My colleague has just done this, and he tells me that the roles
automatically get moved. Since I've not done this myself I can't
corroborate this.

Here's a reference:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;238369

This says in part: "When a domain controller is demoted, if it is not
the last domain controller in the domain, it performs a final
replication and then transfers the roles to another domain
controller."

Cheers,

Brian,

I will simply throw this in!

It is typically not recommended that a DC also be a Terminal Server. A much
better idea - if possible financially - would be to have a member server
used as the Terminal Server.

Just food for thought!

HTH,

Cary

Thanks for the link. It does in fact look like after
moving the Global Catalog, if you have other domain
controllers the rest of the FSMO roles will in fact be
moved automatically.

Thanks for the information.
