We have several different PC's (100mgh to 2.7 ggh) running
several different windows operating systems (Windows 3.1,
98, 2000 and XP). We want to take the data off the "old"
machines and load it onto the "new" machines.

We own a parallel port zip drive and thought we could
systematically transfer data from the "old" to the "new"
using the zip as a transport. It doesn't work. Trying
to "skip" from 3.1 to XP directly does not produce the
desired results. PLEASE HELP!

What exact problems are you having with the data from the Windows 3.1
computers? The files copied to the zip drive should be readable from
Windows XP.

You can use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard that comes with XP
to facilitate the transfer of data from the Windows 98 and Windows
2000 machines, although the file created will probably be too large to
fit onto a single zip disk. You may have to save it to a network
drive or save it on the machine's own hard drive and then burn it to a
CD.

FASTW will not work on a Windows 3.1 machine unfortunately. But if
you have a copy of the Windows 98 Upgrade that is not currently
installed on another computer you could upgrade the Windows 3.x
systems to Windows 98 and then run FASTW if all other approaches fail.

Good luck
