Switching off new hardware function

OK, I have searched everywhere for the answer to this one..how do you
stop XP from installing new hardware (in my case a HP LaserJet 1100)
when it finds a more appropriate/recent driver?
I have swapped the driver on the printer to one that doesn't mess up
printing Sage documents, but XP keeps reinstalling a new one, whose
very existance in the printer folder crashes Sage when printing.
I have tried renaming it, turning it off on boot up, (it loads it when
I turn the printer on) and a number of other things but nothing I do
seems to work.
I can easily run the new hardware wizard manually, so how do I switch
the automatic version off?!

Thanks
Hywel

Hi,

Download and install the latest XP compatible drivers from HP website for the Laser Jet printer.

It's the latest XP drivers that are causing the problem!

The driver XP automatically loads when I boot up causes Sage reports
to crash - even when I am using an old generic (and fully functional)
driver on default. As I say, the very fact that it is listed crashes
Sage. All I can do is delete the new driver every time I switch the
computer on.

Sage support actually suggested that the driver was the problem and
they were right - they descibed it as "aggressive".

I am quite happy to ask Windows to search for the correct driver when
I need to install new hardware. I cannot understand why I can't switch
the automatic facility off!

Further to my last message to Peter, I have solved the problem! I have
just got someone at the office to translate Ghislain's reply and he is
right!

To turn off the automatic hardware update do the following:
Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services. Right click on Plug
and Play and select Properties then change Startup Type to Manual.
Easy!

Merci beaucoup, Ghislain!
