Just wanted to see if someone had already tried this...I have 2 laptops with
exactly the same specs and the unit that is most important appears to have a
hardware issue I am wondering if I just switch the HD on the laptops will XP
Pro be able to tell or will it boot normally???

XP Windows activation will see the change in hardware. It
will require reactivation.

So what hardware does XP attach to? As I said below all the hardware specs
are the same...

It may work with out any issues, only way to tell is to actually do it. I have swapped hard drives
between two Dell laptops with no issues, but you never know until you actually do it. If at worst
and it does not boot you can do a repair install and you won't lose any data on the hard drive, you
will just have to redo the Windows updates.

Are the two XPs factory installed version? If yes, they might be "branded"
OEM versions, which seem to only require a "special" code (????) from the
motherboard BIOS. If not, XP uses a a lot of the motherboard component, NIC
and other devices to build its activation key request.

It will read the same make and model motherboard's SERIAL
NUMBER.

It won't need to be reinstalled if the hardware is in fact
the same, but it will require reactivation.

Not if the hardware is exactly the same. It will see the changed MAC
but that's not enough by itself to trigger a reactivation.
