Just bought a headset.
Even tho the USB jack is in the front of the computer, I don't like the idea
of unplugging/re-plugging. I would like to switch between devices.

I have tried the control panel.. and it works, but it would be nice to bind
a key or something rather than have to open the panel. Really this is
daughter's comp, and I don't want her to have to jump through hoops.

How do you switch audio from headphone to speakers and vice-versa, without
opening up control panel and selecting a new default?

Is that what you do on your Stereo System??.......unplug all of the speakers
and then plug in the Headphones??
Why not keep it simple.........when you plug the headphones in the speakers
should automatically disconnect.....how much more simple can it get??

Yes, when I plug in the headphones the speakers disconnect. But I have to
unplug the headphones when I again want sound from the speakers. I would
like to SWITCH between headphones and speakers without the need to unplug.

Very interesting... you have USB digital headphones?
So you want to simplify switching between speakers and headphones? Does
this include always wearing the headphones so you will personally be ready
for the switch? Or are you willing to pick up and don the headphones
whenever you wish to switch?
And how about different settings for speakers vs headphones?

It seems to me you are in search of a solution without a problem. I am sure
there are outboard units that will accomplish what you want, but perhaps the
money would be better spent on better quality headphones.

Forgive me.. evidentally my question did not fall into the 'basic' category
of windows. I am surprised as just how far afield the responses to my post
have been.

Very simply

*I* use the headphones exclusively. I share the computer with my daughter.
My daughter prefers the sound come through the speakers.

If my daughter logs into the computer and I have neglected to unplug the
headphones after my session, the sound comes through the headphones and not
through the speakers.

Unplugging the headphones will not reset the sound to come through the
speakers.

With limited windows knowledge, her option has been to reboot.

I simply have difficulty believing that windows xp is so contrary that there
is not the ability to click on a button that says 'send sound through
speakers'... WITHOUT having to reboot and WITHOUT having to unplug the
headphones.

Whether you think the question is a non-problem is immaterial. EITHER there
is a way and you know it, in which case I would grateful for the
information, OR it is impossible within Windows xp, in which case I am still
grateful for that knowledge, OR you don't know the answer, in which case I
don't expect a response.
