Can anyone explain exactly what the switchboard manager is
used for and how it differs from using "Tools/Startup" in
order to prevent other users from accessing the design
view of a database. Thanks.

Hi Cathy

They are *completely* different.

Tha switchboard manager is used for setting up a "switchboard", which is a
kind of form-based menu such as you see in the NorthWind sample database.

The Tools>Startup options allow you to set several options such as:
- whether the databse window is displayed when the db opens
- whether the builtin toolbars are displayed
- whether F11 and other special keys are enabled
- and lots more

.Thanks, Graham, for your timely response. I guess I am
still a bit confused regarding the specifics of
the "switchboards" and what they are used for. What do
you mean when you say Form-based menu? How or where do I
access the NorthWind sample database.>

A form-based menu means a form that is used to 'navigate' around your
application. Click a button to open a data entry form, or click a button to
open a report. It allows users easy access to things - they don't need to
know anything about Access, or even see the database window.

If you use Start, Find, Files or Folders and search for northwind.mdb on
your computer, you can locate it. If you can't find it, you may not have a
complete installation of Access. If that's the case, you can install it
from the Office/Access CD.
