Hi,

Any suggestions on the following :

I have a terratec m3po hard disk mp3 player, and I would like to
update the hard disk through USB. The m3po internally needs an IDE
harddisk. Normally, harddrive mp3 files are updated through copying
from mp3 data cd to hard disk.

Are there any cables or enclosures available that have a "dual mode"
ide and usb interface ?

That would be very difficult to do indeed, since it would need
a multi-hosted IDE bus. The IDE standard (unlike SCSI) does not
allow/forsee this.

Or a bridged bus. You can buy an enclosure that takes a standard parallel
ATA drive and has external connectors for both USB2 and SATA. Wouldn't be
surprised if there was one somewhere that supported firewire or USB as
well.

Of course one can just get an IDE enclosure and a USB-to-IDE bridge and plug
the bridge in whenever one needs to.

Or get one of the GMC cases that has an external IDE port on the front.

That should work since SATA is also bridged from IDE.

Probably the easiest solution.

Thanks for the comments,

to make things easier : the drive does not have to support both USB
and IDE at the same time. IDE is for the internal connection for the
drive in the player. USB is for updating the files on the drive once
in a while.

to make things more difficult : the drive is (will be / is meant to
be) built into the terratec player enclosure

How does that change the situation ?

thanks, Ronald
