Switch User Not Available in Ultimate

I hope this isn't something stoopid and I get to feel super foolish, but I
don't have Switch User available on the shutdown menu of my Ultimate
installation.

Found notes online and in the help that say it relies on Fast User
Switching, and that FSU is on by default, but I still got no option to
Switch, and I can't find how to get it.

Anyone?

Paul.

Does it appear on the menu you get when you press Ctrl-Alt-Del?

XP used to disable FUS when a machine was connected to a domain, but even
that isn't a problem any more.

nope, not available when CAD invoked either; if I lock my current session
then CAD again, I get to enter my password for the logged on user or click
Other Credentials button, which then shows me my logged on account and
insert a smart card as the only options available.

And I am connected to a domain, yes, but as you say, that shouldn't matter
any more.

Cheers,

Paul.

Have you tried:
ctrl alt del
down arrow - enter
select account - enter
insert password enter

Have you tried?

Click the start button
then click the right arrow button beside the Lock button
then choose Switch User
Another possibility

Is there a possiblity of a GPO that prevents this coming from your domain,
have you run an RSOP to see if that could be it. The other idea i had was
maybe some of the services that are required aren't starting. Have you
looked at the app log or have do you changed any services?

There used to be a Fast User Switching service, but I think this is handled
by the terminal services service now, could be wrong...but worth a shot

When I CAD from my current session, the options I get are;
Lock This Computer
Log Off
Change A Password
Start Task Manager

That was the first place I looked, and when I click onthe right arrow beside
the Lock button I get;
Log Off
Lock
Restart
Sleep
Hibernate
Shut Down

other early adopters on the same domain (with Vista Business, not Ultimate,
mind you) have got the Switch User option, and I'm a Domain Admin too.

There's no FSU service anymore, as you mentioned, the Terminal Services
service is started, and searching the system event log for the word Switch
draws a blank...

Glad it's not something obvious I've missed, judging by the respsonses so
far...

In Windows Vista, Fast User Switching can't be turned off, well at least to
the best of my knowledge.

Have a try at this:

Windows Vista supports fast user switching in both domain and workgroup
configurations.
To switch users, press Ctrl+Alt+Del and then click the Switch User button.

1) In a workgroup, the Log On screen is displayed as at startup.

2) In a domain, a screen appears with the message "Press Ctrl+Alt+Del To
Log On," and you must press Ctrl+Alt+Del again to display the Log On screen.

Hope this takes care of you,
Cheers - the weekend is almost here!!

the problem being, of course, that when I CAD there I don't get a Switch
User button...

I'm gonna try leaving the domain, checking if it's available when I'm in a
workgroup, then re-joining the domain, see what happens.

Or, head on down through Group Policy to ...

Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | System | Logon | Hide
entry points for Fast User Switching.

Disable or undefine it.

You're welcome.

After pressing WinKey+L to lock the workstation, select the "Switch User"
button at the bottom. If this button is missing, it's most probably due to a
Policy setting which turns off Fast User Switching.

Follow the registry route indicated in the following article:

Note that you'll need to delete the value named "HideFastUserSwitching" if
it exists

My default install of the Vista 64 Ultimate has the user switch menu
item on all the menu's both for shutdown and ctrl alt delete.

I'm wondering if it was an install option ?

That's normal behavior.

OK, left the domain; Switch User not available when in Workgroup or when
re-joined to domain...

Tada!
Used gpedit.msc to set the HideFastUserSwitching option, then edited the
registry to remove the key it created, and lo and behold, all my entry
points are now available.

Thanks all for sticking with me; god only knows why they weren't there out
the box. And thanks Tony4554 for the right steer in the end.
