I'm looking for documentation to switch my domain to native mode and can't
find anything. Can someone give me some links..

thanks
John

The switch to native mode only affects NT 4.0 BDCs in the same domain. It
does not affect:
NT 4.0 member server
NT 4.0 clients
Trusts with NT 4.0 domains
Child domains with NT 4.0 BDCs
Parent domains with NT 4.0 BDCs
Child or Parent domains with NT 4.0 member servers

Making the change is virtually un noticed by your clients. You can make the
change "live".
Once you make the switch to native mode you can not change back. This is
probably the most important part.

One FYI
*if* you *ever* have to rename a Win 2k domain, it requires you to add a NT
4.0 BDC to your domain, replicate, then run dcpromo on all Win 2k DCs to
remove AD (and loose all user/domain info), then start the upgrade all over
again. Once you switch to native mode (you can not switch back to mixed
mode) you will no longer be able to add a NT 4.0 BDC to your domain to hold
your domain/user info while you remove AD from all Win 2k DCs. You will have
to enter the user info by hand.
Or upgrade to 2003 and change the name in the process.

If there is the possibility that your domain will be renamed in the future
(buy out? Owner changes?) Don't make the switch, unless your domain is small
enough that entering user accounts by hand is a valid option. If you have
more than say 75 users I would make sure (as sure as you can be predicting
the future!) that the domain name is not going to change at least until the
company is ready for an OS upgrade.

AFAIK there is no one definitive article that details the pros and cons of
doing this. There are articles that detail what you gain by making the
switch (Universal groups, etc) but I have yet to see any article that
details how the switch will affect or not affect trusts, member servers,
clients, etc. I learned this through experience and putting two and two
together.

so basically remove the NT DC's and just do it?

No reboot required. AFAIK what state Exchange is in makes no difference.
