Windows XP Switch to error

I am getting an error message with one of my programs regarding Microsoft Word. It comes up with;

"MS office Word normal template is already open"

"This application cannot be completed because the other application is busy
choose switch to to close the other application"

When I click switch, it does nothing. I'm on Office 2003 and it will open more than once.

Any ideas what I can try?

Is that the exact error message you get from it?

Under the help menu try to run detect & repair (or diagnose), I forget what it's called in Office 2003, but you'll know what I mean when you see it
