I recently upgraded my NT4 network. I upgraded the PDC
with Windows 2000. I have added a new, more powerful
server running Windows 2000 and installed AD on it from
the Manage Your Server wizard. I want to move all AD
functions to the new server and demote the original
server. What would the the propersteps to take and in
what order?

Thanks for any assistance in advance!

To do this you will net to transfer the FSMO roles. There are 5 roles.
RID Master
PDC Emulator
Infrastructure Master
Domain Naming Master
Schema Master.
Here is a step by steb to change the roles. It does not matter which
order you do this in. after you have transfered all roles you can safely
dcpromo the server to a member server.

If The server does not demote successful like mine did last night which made
for a long night, you will need to us the ntdsutil utility to do a metabase
cleanup
Here is how to to that

Does moving the 5 FSMO roles also make the new DC the
Global Catalog Server? The reason I ask is that after I
demote the original DC, I will be taking it offline.

Thanks again for your assistance!

Dear Harry,

Please do not put the Infrastructure Master (IM) role on the same domain
controller as the global catalog server. If the Infrastructure Master runs
on a global catalog server it will stop updating object information because
it does not contain any references to objects that it does not hold. This
is because a global catalog server holds a partial replica of every object
in the forest.

To create or move a Global Catalog server in Windows 2000, please refer to
the following article:

Thanks and have a good day!
