I need to use one design template for the first 20 slides, and then switch
and use a different design template for the rest of the presentation. It
seems like you can only use the same design template throughout the whole
presentation. The help files and online help does not provide any kind of
answer. Thank you for your help.

Multiple masters was introduced in PowerPoint 2002, so if you have 2000 or
earlier, you are mostly out of luck (workarounds include linking together
two separate presentations). If you have 2002 or above, you can select the
slides you want to have a new design, and choose Slide Design from the
Format menu. Now, instead of clicking on the design in the task pane, click
on the little arrow next to the design and choose Apply to Selected Slides
from the menu that pops up.
