Anyone on the list use SWISH to make a multimedia website ? I'm just
wondering how well it works with FrontPage and what the learning curve is
like.

Hi John,

I am sure many people here at least dabble with either Swish or Flash.

If you are just starting out..Swish has a much smaller price tag as well as
a much shorter learning curve than Flash. My opinion is either should only
be used in moderation. Keeping that in mind Swish might be a better value
for you (though Flash can do more)

John,

Swish is pretty easy to learn, but it is a seperate application, so once you
create your content, you need to Export it to your FrontPage Web.

Swish will create the .swf file as well as an html file when exported to
your web, from there you could just copy the .swf file (from the generated
html file) and insert it into any page you wish.

I agree with Joe on the use of Flash in a website (Moderation), but Swish
does offer plenty of features to create very nice flash sites.

Hi JDR,

Doing OK for an old-timer!

I still lurk here quite a bit...but don't always find the time to post that
I would like.As I get older the two fingers I have for typing get a little
slower! Or is it the brain? Or maybe both!

:-)

So I take it that you don't care for "all Flash" sites such as the one at:

??????

And thanks for the info and advice. I'll usually try to keep it as light
as possible as you can see at my primary site. I want my next site to be
something really different. I'm going to try to market to a more lucerative
clientelle and I'm sure they all have broadband. Something simple and
elegant with just the right touch of "drama" for want of a better word.

BTW, exactly how secure is Flash ? Anybody can copy plain HTML and even
pickup some scripting from their cache. I'd hate to spend days on building
a good flash site and find out someone copied my work.

I definitely don't. An all Flash site is a big mistake *unless* your
demographic is a good match for it - like nike.com, for example.

It's no more secure than HTML. There are swf file decompilers.

Now that is one cool site ! And I am going to be marketing to the "well to
do" segment in the area. Perhaps you can recommend some reading for
marketing through the web. Until now I've mostly been concerned with the
technical and logistical aspects of site design. I've never actually built
one that I wanted to use as a "big stick" for marketing.

Anything that can be built can be unbuilt I guess.

Thanks for your time and info.

FYI: Not all search engines can index flash based sites.

Thanks Thomas. That's a concern but I've written off search engines
anyway. I think ranking is now mostly bought and paid for just like shelf
space in a grocery store. FYI, I just ran a Google-rank search using
"darkroom silver" and the URL for my site. It didn't even hit the top 1000.

I don't play the search engine (ranking) game, but I do want the search engines to be able index all
of the content on my client's sites.

I'm not sure how this is accomplished these days. As you can see on my
home page, I include a link to my TOC which is kept updated and in the root
of the web. That particular site is about 99% HTML with a little PHP only
in the forum (inactive) and the Gallery (inactive). I even reuse the exact
same header in every page except I change the title and the .css. Dr.Watson
says :

Search engine compatability:

You have a 16-word description of your site in a META tag, good!
You have a nice, short list of 6 important keywords in a META tag, good

I've even put the Google search widget on many of my pages.

Areas where there are exceptions are the use of BORDERCOLR and BACKGROUND
for tables. Also I rarely put in ALT text.

And after all of that Google still only lists about half of the actual
pages for a search and less than 15% of the site is generally listed on
their server.

Table attributes have no bearing on indexing. I use ALT text but have never seen the content
indexed.

If you are going to use meta tags, they must contain the keywords that appear in the text content of
the page they appear on.
