How to get rid of them ?? cause i get those damn emails
of about 100 a day ..

Filtering is about all you can do, but it is a tedious task. What I
did was switched to a Hotmail account for my private mail. The server
level filers push all of the virus infected junk into a junk folder
and it doesn't interfere with standard email. That seems to be the
best solution I've come up with.

On a more humorous note, the creator obviously has a hard on for MS.
In this case, all he did was make them a quick $20.00 USD

It's weird.

I have 5 active email addresses which I use one a daily basis, but only one
of them is getting all the crap. The other four are fine (for now!).

Once thing I have noticed is that the email address that is receiving the
junk happens to be the only one I use when posting on Usenet......

Mike.

try spampal.org. - freeware

It filters emails for you, by using common addresses of email servers
which have been hacked, or do not protect themselves well enough.

It also has a plug-in bayesian filter, which so far has caught 100% of
the swn worms for me (around 300-400 in 2 days)

others include spam assasin, K9 and others - mostly, if not all
freeware

From:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]
"Searches .html, .asp, .eml, .dbx, .wab, .mbx files on the hard disk for
email addresses.", therefore your correct address is in my
alt.comp.anti-virus.dbx file (above address munged "X" by me) so if I get
it, you have a good chance of being sent a greeting.

Works great for me and filters 100% for now :)

thank you :)

Same for me. The boxes I use for email every day have seen 0 Swen, but one
that I use only on usenet, and not very often there, is getting flooded.
Maybe posting here is a good way to attract Swen.

Fortunately, the Swen stuff is so repetitive it's easy to spot and delete.

I saw a message somewhere -- someone specuating that swen was using
newsgroups to find recipient addresses.

My rate of receiving swen has dropped significantly since yesterday.
Hopefully it will go away soon.

Imagine the inventor or inventors of this swen crap getting bombed
themselves? That is why all these virus worms have an escape route. They do
not execute automatic, for instance. The "mothers" of these hack worm
viruses don't want to blow up their own computer systems with their own
virus worm hacks.

I have been hit with a worm ahb or something like that without even opening
email, nortons quarantined & I deleted. I thought we had to open the mail
for it. According to nortons list it is not a threat.

Worm.Automat.AHB is the same as w32.swen.a@mm I believe.

Old name ~ new name.

Updated (again) defs may give you new name detections.

Also known as a new Gibe variant.

You have out of date information. Norton has revised its assessment.

It's in the wild, low damage, but high distribution.

If Norton caught it, you're probably okay.

However, if you didn't have an antivirus program, and your email
program hasn't been updated in over 2 years, or if you reinstalled it
and didn't run the fix, then you're in trouble even if you didn't open
the email.

At that time, Outlook Express would automatically run certain
executable attachments when they showed up in your inbox, I think when
they were visible in the preview pane.

This was from March, 2001:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-020.asp

"Some types of attachments, such as executable files, are inherently
dangerous. In these cases, IE should only open the attachment if the
user expressly asks to do so, and confirms that he wants to open it.
The flaw, however, enables this safeguard to be circumvented by
specifying an incorrect MIME type in the e-mail."
