My original desktop had XP pro 32 bit

it died

i bought a Dell with Vista Home premium installed (32 bit on a 64 bit
machine, the idiots don't give you a choice)

the laptop runs poorly so I took my xp disc and put it ion the laptop, it
activaetd perfectly and runs just fine

I am in the process of repairing my desktop

Can I use the Vista Home Premium key from the dell on the desktop

I am simply swapping OS's that i have paid for from 1 machine to another

Will this work? / is it permissable under the EULA?

Before calling them idiots, are you sure the software you want to run will
work under 64bit? They're building the machine for the largest possible
user base. They have otehr configurations available with 64bit if you
wanted.

No as it is an OEM copy and is tied to the machine it was originally
installed on.

Yeah, but (at least) one of the OSs you paid for is an OEM and is tied to
the machine it came on.

No, not permissible.

OK, so why offer a 64bit CPU and no matching OS?
Ironically their driver download page does have drivers for Vista 64 bit for
this laptop...i thought dell were about customization and choice

Dell conned you; you HAVE to ask for 64bit OS, 32bit is always sold as the
default OS, unless YOU ask for 64bit.

Besides the legal side of OEM disks, Dell's disks are tied to their
motherboard, and they won't work on another computer.

They do offer 64bit OS. You just didn't request it. It's not popular yet
(and thus most of the quick-pick SKUs don't come with it) because the
majority of what most consumers want to do doesn't work on the 64bit OS.
When software catches up enough to tip the scale, then the quick-pick SKUs
will have 64bit OS.

And you do know that 64bit capable CPUs have been available to consumers for
quite sometime, right? My current primary machine's CPU (over 2 years old)
will run 64bit. I'm not on a 64bit version of Windows yet as not enough of
what I do has 64bit versions of the software available.

Yes, and as stated above, you didn't get a 64bit OS cause you didn't ask for
it.
