On a Windows 2000 server, can you unplug the keyboard and
mouse while the power is on? I need to replace the items
and don't want to power down if I don't have to. Thanks.

Hi,
Well you can but be advised its an iffy chance whether or
not you loose your computer.I know some people who have
done it but it sure is dangerous. make sure they are the
same type tho.

That is not a recommended proceedure. Sometimes you get away with it,
sometimes the motherboard doesn't recover. It's up to you.

Not a good idea. Sometimes (actually, most times) you gan get
away with it. Keep in mind that there's a constant electrical
current running across these PS/2 type connectors whilst the
motherboard is powered up. You take some small chance of causing
a direct short circuit if you remove either of these connectors
whilst power is applied. Three things can happen:
You get away with it ... most likely scenario
You crash the server
You fry the motherboard

Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances.

Greetings --

You can usually safely unplug them without doing any damage.
However, after you've plugged in the new ones, if they're PS/2, you
won't have any control of the server until you reboot it, which you
will be able to do only by pressing the power switch. Additionally,
in my personal experience, plugging in a PS/2 keyboard, with power
applied to the system, will destroy the motherboard about 10% of the
time.
