Happy New Year

Hi Svend or whoever may help,

I had a similar problem on this hard drive about 6 months ago and Svend sent
a batch file that fixed it after he viewed the findpart output.

I am going to replace this drive tomorrow or monday. I guess it decided to
have one last crash before being replaced. But I need to copy the data on
this partition to the new
drive. I regret to say I did not learn how to use findpart last time.

The drive has 3 partitions - 1 for WinME - 1 for WinXP (I dual boot) and 1
is just a logical drive. The WinME partition is the one that got corrupted.
I tried fdisk /MBR with
no joy. Boot Magic had a sector for the dual boot but it seems to be gone. I
can
always replace that.

I downloaded the latest fp. The output is:

supported part of the disk is examined. Disks are numbered from 1.

The FAT of the primary partition does not contain any information. One
possible explanation is that you attempted to recreate the partition
using Partition Magic.

Do:

findpart finddir 1 0 405 fp-a.txt

Mail me the file fp-a.txt.

I will reply here.

Hi Svend. Thank you for helping. I sent you fp-a.txt.

I didn't use Partition Magic on the old drive but a possible explanation
for the empty FATs is that in preparing to replace the old drive I had
copied each partition to CD discs. I used a Plextor CD drive backup program
called CD ResQ.

I was in WinME and copying the backed up WinME partition on the CD set
to the 1st partition on the new drive when I started getting error messages.
Eventually WinME locked up and I had to use the reset button. On rebooting,
I saw
the message from Boot Magic that said WinME could not be booted.

When I was using CD ResQ, I was very, very careful to choose the NEW drive
as the target
but I supposed the old drive may have somehow been chosen.

After that I used a Boot Magic rescue diskette to set WinXP partition to
active, booted into XP
and added fdisk & findpart to a boot diskette. I rebooted with the BM
diskette, set the
corrupted partition active and rebooted to the boot diskette containing
fdisk & fp.
I copied fdisk to the corrupted partition and did "fdisk /MBR".
It didn't fix the problem and so that's when I rebooted, ran "findpart all"
and prayed
you were around to answer my distress call.

Searches for subdirectories and calculates cluster two
location. 'Cluster' is cluster number or cluster 2 CHS.
'KB' is cluster KB. May also say something about FAT location.

Traces from three different FAT32 partition were found in the
beginning of the disk. It can be the same partition manipulated by a
partitioning tool.

But no substantial FAT is present in the area of the current first
primary hidden FAT32 partition.

If missing files were in that area, it is a FAT32 without FAT recovery
case (a formatted partition), meaning that most files can be
recovered, but it will be more or less difficult depending on whether
the files are fragmented.

I may be able to help by mail for not fragmented files when you have
the new disk to which you can copy files, or you can try a usual
recovery program.

Okay. Thanks Svend Olaf.

I have the new drive. It's much larger than the old one.
I used Partition Magic to create 3 partitions on the new drive.
The partitions are identical in everything except size.
My plan was to use Plextor CD ResQ to copy the old drive's
partitions to the new drive.

I cannot use PM any more as it is an old version that doesn't work in
WinXP and the WinME partition is the corrupted one.
Hmmm. Wait I have a PM emergency diskette. So if you need me
to do anything with it I can try.

I have no solid explanation as to why so much of the FAT is missing.
It is an old drive. I was having to run chkdsk on it every few days.

If tracing down the exact reason why this drive's partition corrupted
(missing FAT info) is imporatant or helpful to you or the group let me know
and I will
do whatever I can per your suggestions.

Hope you got the fp-a.txt I sent.

Regards,

Bill
