I have read that svchost can be a virus. Is this true?
I did a search and found 4 locations on my computer.
C:\I386 7kb Ex_file
C:\windows\I386 Ex_file
C:\windows\prefetch 9kb PF file
C:\windows\system32 application

My computer is running slow and I am getting tired of
trying to fix it.
In task manager svchost.exe the user name: local service
will run at around 320,000k the CPU is 100% and the page
file usage will run as high as 1.7GB and I keep getting
messages that my virtual memory is low and is being
increased. My settings for paging file size is initaly
600MB and a maximum of 1650MB. If I turn on the computer
and don't open anything it takes about 45 minutes to get
to these levels. If I end the svchost.exe task the cpu
drops to around 4% and PF drops to about 128MB.

How do I find out what programs or processes svchost is
running?

I have used my virus scan and it has found nothing. yes
it is updated. I also use Ad-aware and Spybot search and
destroy. they are also updated. all the problems have
been fixed that were found.

My OS is windows XP home edition, I have 384MB ram, 40gig
HD,1.7Ghz processor
My virus scan is Mcafee virus scan. it is set to
automaticly check for updates and install them I also
check manualy just in case about 2 times a week.
I have ad-aware. it is current on its updates
I also have spybot S&D it current also
I have even gone online and used several free virus,
spyware and trojan scans but none have found any problems
that have anything to do with what is going on with my
computer.

I would appreciate any help with resolving this problem.

Hit at the same time ctrl+alt+delete click on the
process tab.
their is no reason that this should be in the prefetch
folder!
I think that McCrappy droped the ball on this one.
do an online virus scam here.

good luck

Thanks for the help. The web address you gave me was one
of the many online scans I tried in the past but I scaned
with it again just incase. It didn't find anything.
Do you have any other ideas or suggestions for me to try?
Also you said that svchost should not be in prefetch.
If I deleted it from that location would that do
anything?
