Can one of you good MVP's explain what SVCHOST programme I
often see in task manager actually does?

Many thanks from a damp dull London!!!

Macca,

Svchost.exe is the loader of windows services. You may see 4-5 instances of svchost, each will contain a grouping of services.

A Description of Svchost.exe in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314056

More Information:
If you want to see which services are run by each Svchost process:

For XP Pro:
Click Start | run | CMD
Type "Tasklist /svc >c:\list.txt"
The list.txt will contain the services list (also the ones launched by each SVCHost process)

Windows XP Home does not have tasklist.exe. I'm not sure if it works for XP Home if you copy it over.

Hello Ramesh,
Just for your info:I downloaded tasklist.exe for my xp
home it will open but it closes to fast to read it.
Later

Copy tasklist.exe to>>

C:\WINDOWS\system32

Once you have done that.
Start | Run | Type: cmd | OK
Type: tasklist /svc | hit Enter

Type: tasklist /? | hit Enter
This will show help.

Hello Ramesh;
I have XP Home. Tasklist.exe does work for XP Home.
You have to put it in >> C:\WINDOWS\system32

Open a Command Prompt window and run the Tasklist /svc command.
