Anyone know what to do when a svchost takes all system
resources and never finishes. The task bar is not
accessable unitl the faulty svchost is forced to end.

There is a possibility that you have a virus. Perhaps
MSBlaster. Have you downloaded and installed the
available service packs?

Update your anti-virus program and run. As long as you're
doing that you might as well download and run programs
that check for spy and mal-ware. Do a Google search for
Ad-Aware and Spybot (both have free versions). Do you
have a firewall in place? Google to Zone Alarm - also
free.

For further information of MSBlaster check

I've installed Adaware and ran it. Ran Symantec's Norton,
live-update everymorning, 4 times in past 3 days. Updated
WindowsXP, showes completely up-to-date on Update page.
I've also ran the online virus scan from Micro Trend.

No virus has ever been detected, and AdAware cleaned 18
spybot programs. The problem is ever persistant, I'm
thinking it is not a virus as most people suggest. That
or Symantec and Micro Trend don't know about it yet.

To avoid a 10 minute startup, I open up taskmanager and
end task on svchost.exe (network system), so far it has
not caused any adverse effects to my system.
