svchost taking over the cpu

My daughters Dell pc has started to hang when booting.
The desktop loads ok but putting the mouse on the taskbar
shows the hourglass. The usual startup programs do not
load and appear in the systray. In the task manager it
shows svchost.exe using 95-99 percent of the cpu cycles.
I checked the drive on another pc and there is no virus or
worm that can be found. No new hardware has been added. I
can open the control panel but cannot open any icons.
McAfee antivirus is supposed to load at startup but I
cannot get to it to shut it down. Safe mode will not let
me uninstall programs so that's no help.
Anybody got any ideas?

Hi,

Hit ctrl+shift+escape, go to the processes tab. Is on of the listings for
dllhost.exe? If so, then this is the Welchia worm at work. Update your
antivirus and run a full system scan to be sure (or to rule it out).
