I am frequently getting a SVCHOST.EXE error popping up. It
indicates the program has shut down and that an error log
has been created; I can then click cancel. What does this
mean?

Interesting that you're getting that too. Mine started doing that when
all of the hullabloo started about the ms-blaster worm started,
although I have done everything I good find out about detecting and
removing that worm, I don't seem to have it.

For what it is worth, my message occurs when I've been on dialup with
AT&T for awhile.

Hope someone can enlighten us. BTW I'm running W2K SP3 on my machine.

We had the same problem on a number of Windows 2000 PC's
during the msblast virus outbreak. Although we could not
find msblast on any of the PC's, I assumed it was due to
just updating the Trend Micro anti-virus solution and not
updating the windows 2000 O/S.

It was likely due to the port attack that blaster uses (even if it
did not infect) which tends to destabalize or crash RPC and svchost.
This is the RPC/DOCOM vulerability that MS03-026 patches.
