I posted this question elsewhere and didn't get much response so I'll try
this group hoping it is a more support type group.
My computer at work (very small company without IT support) running Win XP
Home gives me an error when I log on. It is a Generic Host Process for Win
32 Services Data Execution Prevention, Windows closes a program. The
window asking if I want to send to MS opens and I read the technical
details. It gives two paths
"C:\DOCUME~\Mee\Locals~1\Temp\WER8ec5.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp" and then the
same except last part "\appcompat.txt".
I have been Googling for explanations and got a couple but the bottom line
is reformat/reinstall seems to be the only advice I get. Is it possible I
got a worm? Norton has been running in auto update mode for at least a year
and this problem just started.
This same error sometimes makes me OK it 11 times before the error and the
asking to send error report to MS finally goes away. The taskbar has an
hourglass the whole time so I can't QuickLaunch but I can go to the desktop
and double click something like Outlook and it will open OK and then the
error window seems to give up and goes away. As you can probably tell, I can
use computers OK for work but not a repairman by any means. I can
reformat/reinstall if necessary but not looking forward to the time that
would take.
Thanks

Sorry about the spelling...fat fingers, bad eyes!
Thanks for the links; I will try them.
I have run AdAware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and of course the Norton
Virus Scan.
None of them seem to find any problems.
There are several scvhost.exe programs running presently, according to Task
Manager. I am guessing most or all are legitimate and necessary. Any way to
tell which one might be the guilty party?
Thanks

Do a search, Svchost should be in the System32 folder, not any other
folder.
Scvhost should not be anywhere.
Remember the badies are always ahead of the goodies & in a case like
this, you need to get checks from other sources. How did the checks go
?
