Svchost has generated errors - Why ???

I plan to search the MS knowledge base, but thought I'd also ask here

Monday before going to work I checked Email and a couple web site, no
problems or errors, everything worked as usual (Win2k Pro SP2)

Monday evening when I went on the Internet, I got an error message
that svchost.exe has generated errors, you must restart... but I was
not able to close my modem connection and had to restart everything

I have not installed anything new (computer just sat between the
time I checked mail in the morning and the errors after work)

Far as I know I don't have a virus (use Norton)

Does anyone have any ideas on why svchost is generating errors?

Hey there John. I have a story for you and anyone else
who is interested.

I installed all of the critical patches off of Microsoft's
site last Tuesday to make sure that my system was covered
against this newest threat (the worm). After doing this I
observed distinct problems with Internet Explorer (5.0
SP2). I then tried everything, and I ended up removing
three of the patches with the add / remove program off of
the control panel. Explorer and all systems were go once
again.

Last night I started having my svchost.exe program crash.
Right before this happened my Norton program started
telling me that it was corrupted. I un-installed and
deleated Norton. I have not been able to load it again
since I somehow have a corrupted installer. As far as I
know svchost.exe is needed primarily for Internet
Explorer. My internet connection only last (or works) for
whatever amount of time that svchost.exe is working.

I am thinking of doing a re-install over what is currently
installed. I am hoping to try this with the newest
Internet Explorer and then Windows 2000 (SP4) first. If
this works I am going to install Office 2000 once again.
Has anyone else done this?

I checked for problems (virus, worms, etc) using any virus
detection programs that I could find, however nothing
showed up. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
 
I haven't used IE5 anywhere for ages - haven't seen a single problem with
any of the machines I've patched... firewalls are also a must, as is
antivirus software. IE5 is old stuff; IE6 SP1 is really what you want.
