svchost has generated errors ... What To Do?

I recently was having troubles with turning off the volume to my modem when it was dialing out.
Eventually, I solved this problem by reinstalling the modem driver. Now after dialing up the
internet, I get an error message that reads:

Program Error
svchost has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart. An error log
is being created.

The effect is that I cannot disconnect. When I try the dial-up dialog, it won't come up and if I
click on properties the Disconnect menu item will not disconnect.

About a month ago I posted a message titled "Unsafe User Pop-up--How Kill It?". To solve the problem
of occasionally getting some message about Messenger Unsafe User. I had recently upgraded from NT
4.0 to W2000, and had never seen the message before. It was suggested that I put Messenger in manual
mode. Maybe this has something to do with my problem? The problem didn't start occurring until I
reinstalled the modem driver.

Anyway, my question is how to prevent the svchost message and keep control of the dial-up? The only
way to disconnect is to reboot.

You have some version of the recent Blaster virus/worm. Check the web
for how to fix. And install a good antivirus package, and a firewall.

I was able to find the symantec on-line virus scan utility, and it detected no viruses or worms. The
scan program is available under a security something choice on one of their web pages. It is not
directly listed as a virus scan utility until you get to the page where you execute it.

I've seen this response, it's a virus, to my post and another post. My experience with the virus
scan suggests it isn't so. If it is a virus, it seems awfully tame. That is, it's effect is to
somehow disable the svchost program and do nothing more.

Wayne - I could be mistaken, of course, but in recent weeks the blaster
has been responsible for a great many svchost problems - svchost is one
of its targets for its shenanigans. There's a code fix and lots of
accompanying descriptive material on the MS website, as well as similar
stuff on the antivirus websites, should you elect to explore further.
Blaster was a fairly subtle little thing.

It *is* the Blaster worm, but you do not have it, which is why the
antivirus utilities are not detecting it.

The Blaster worm is very poorly written. More often than not, it
crashes the service which it is trying to exploit; namely, the RPC
service which runs under svchost.exe.

Every time you connect to the Internet, you are getting hit by some
Blaster-infected machine which is trying to infect you, with the
result that your svchost.exe process crashes.

Apply hotfix <http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=824146> and you will
no longer be vulnerable to this attack. Then the svchost.exe crashes
will stop.

A respondent mentioned that my difficulty with svchost is caused by a weak attempt by the virus
MSBlaster to work its way into my system. I've since put up a fire wall and will take additional
measures.

Wayne,
I had the same problem on my laptop running Windows
2000. (Mine was caused by a conflict with Novell
software). There is a fix in the Microsoft Knowledge base
involving changing some registry values in regedit. Do a
search on the wording of the error message and the article
will tell you what you need to know. After I applied the
fix, the problem has disappeared and the dial up has
worked fine ever since.
