My svchost.exe is faulting in module hpgtpusd.dll. I
don't have a clue what is causing this problem or how to
repair.

Do you happen to have an HP scanner?
If so, it's probably the driver for the scanner...check
HP's website to see if there's a new driver version.

Scanned my C:\ in XP Home and have no hpgtpusd.dll (but
perhaps you're running XP Pro). svchost.exe can be used
by some spyware/trojans/etc. so you should make sure you
don't have such things on your computer. If you don't
have an anti-virus program you can find on line virus
scans at:
http://security.symantec.com
http://housecall.trendmicro.com
http://www.coledata.com/virusalert.htm
http://www.cybertechhelp.com/html/misc/av.php

On line trojan scan:

You can fight spyware stuff by finding SpyBot and Ad-Aware
on Google. Update and run both of these daily.

If it turns out that this fixes your current problem then
you have to make sure it doesn't happen again.

If you don't have one then get a good anti-virus program -
update and run weekly. Set its auto-protect feature to ON.

If you aren't already behind a firewall then activate the
one that comes with XP (open Help and Support and
search 'firewall' - or get Zone Alarm - which you can find
via Google.

Download all the Microsoft service packs for your system
and check regularly for new ones.
