Can a virus mask itself as svchost.exe, my system is
clean now after running two virus programs, but I am
still having problems with svchost.exe. It keeps on
wanting to access the internet as a server and a few
other things.

Thanks
John

Viruses can and do mask themselves by running under svchost.exe.

To keep your computer free of viruses, your antivirus program must be
running in the background at all times, must start with Windows, must be
configured to provide maximum protection and must be updated at least
weekly. Only use one antivirus program.

I know I have a virus then! I would like to do a clean
install, format, of my hard drive, would this delete the
virus? Is it possible for it to attach itself to any
other part of my computer, memory, bios. I dont know if
I'm asking the right question but when registering xp a
popup,virus, shut down my computer.

Thanks
John

Before you think about reinstalling, visit the Symantec web site's online
virus scanner at
http://security.symantec.com/default.asp?productid=symhome&langid=ie&venid=sym.

Symantec - the author of Norton AntiVirus - may have a tool that you can
use to remove the virus. Other antivirus software authors' web sites have
similar tools; I'm just most familiar with Symantec.

If you are unsuccessful at removing the virus, you will need to perform a
clean install of Windows XP and all your software, a big job that can take
you on twists and turns if you don't get it just right. So try to remove the
virus first. And get yourself full time antivirus protection - no one should
run a computer without it.

Thanks Rocket I did as suggested and my pc seems to be
clean, I'll leave things as they are for now and hope my
pc settles down.

Thanks

Check out this site for information as to what operations
are performed by svchost.exe and what can be turned off.

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Part way down the first page you will find a downloadable
file showing all the services running and which ones that can be
turned off or run as "manual" instead of "automatic".
Further down the page is the complete list of services is
shown.
