Several instances of "svchost.exe" are running
simultaneously on my computer under XP, and one in
particular uses 16,000 KB of memory even though no
applications are in use. Can I delete "svchost.exe" if I
am not running any applications.

I assume that it will be called by any process for which
it is needed or will start on startup if needed.

Is this correct?

.

It's normal to have several svchost processes running. At
the moment I have four: 4,020 / 1,876 / 17,204 / 3,484.
One of them is using 02% of the CPU, the rest 0.0%.

I would suggest leaving them alone unless one of them
begins to use up your CPU - one of the signs of a virus.
