There are several instances of svchost.exe running on my
XP Home. One of those instances and the System (user name)
cpu usage total 100%. The usage values shown vary
considerably, from 2% plus 98% to perhaps 90% plus 10%,
as examples. The actual numbers vary considerably and are
continuosly changing. Any idea what's going on?

Try scanning for spyware, viruses, worms, trojans, etc.

The one taking up the big chunk is a virus/spyware/trojan
etc...
Get a good av program thats upto date, also scan for
spyware(try adaware and spybot).
