I log on to Windows Update, scan for available updates,
click to download updates and then receive the following
message---"svchost.exe has generated errors and will be
closed by Windows. You will need to restart the
program." At this point I can not download or disconnect
my dial-up connection. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

Either secure your system with a NAT router and/or software firewall
first (agains MSBlast and RPC-attack variants) or download the MS03-026
patch on a secure system, then install it locally while not connected
to the Internet. And then ensure you have implimented "firewalling" of
some sort. In all cases scan for the worms with updated A-V before and
after.
