When I get online and use my Windows 2000, the following
message keeps popping up: svchost.exe has generated
errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to
restart program.
I can't print anything and I can't use my regular email.
I can just use my hotmail account to send email. Help!

Hiya Sylvia,

I used to have this problem too... Try installing the
patch from MS website.... SP4. I managed to get rid of
this problem after the patch. enjoy troubleshooting.

cheers,
Swee.

I am having/incurring the very same problem here in
Dallas on my stand-alone office computer. Can anyone help
me out there? Please!

You are facing the problem of countless others with this
MSBlast worm. You must get the patch from microsoft in
order for it to go away.

For a temporary solution, start up your computer. DO NOT
try to connect to the internet. Open up your task manager
and look at the processes. msblast.exe will be running.
END this task. Do a search of your hard drive and look for
msblast.exe. when it finds it, delete that file and
anything else that turns up and says msblast.exe.

You will now be able to get out to the internet to get the
patch. After you get the patch, go to Norton or McAfee to
get the removal tool. This will automate everything nicely
for you.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, this is not working. We have installed the
patch on all of our systems in our facility, updated the
virus software, run FIXBLAST.EXE and certified the
machines are clean... and the SVCHOST.EXE error continues
to occur.

Any reasonable suggestions on what to look for here would
be appreciated.

That is strange. The svchost.exe error was directly
linked with the RPC service shutting down due to the
blaster worm. the new Welchia worm is out there but it was
generally supposed to exploit the same vulnerability as
the blaster worm. As of right now, I read some articles in
some forums that still had the error due to service pack
problems. Here is a link to one.

I know there were a few ports that you could turn off
related to the RPC service. You can check either Norton or
McAfee and they should be able to tell you.

I don't know if this will help much because I haven't seen
the issue myself, but I hope it at least gives a starting
point.
