i am running a dsl connection to my home network, which
consists of 2 machines connected to a router. one of the
machines is running windows 2000 server, and from the
second i log on until i log off, there are several
svchost.exe processes that are in constant communication
with someone.

i don't exactly know what svchost does or is doing. it is
my understanding that it is a generic process that runs
various services.

my question is: should i be concerned by this? is there
a way that i can see exactly what it is that is happening,
and is there a way for me to disable at least some of
these processes?

if anyway has any knowledge or experience on this matter i
would appreciate any advice that may be given.

Get a firewall program. I found with XP that even though I had all updates,
time syncing etc turned off that multiple svchosts were running and that I
was uploading as much data as I was downloading and that the modem lights
were on almost all the time. This was on clean installs and tracing the ips
lead me to believe they were MS fronts even though they did not identify as
such and so I was suprised when even XPs inbuilt firewall stopped the
behaviour when turned on although imagine the outcry and loss of confidence
if their firewall let their comms through. It should be noted that the
agreeing to the license of XP and MS Messenger and Media Player allow MS
access to your machine and this applies to win2k/98/95 etc if you use later
versions of the last two apps mentioned.
