Are you sure you don't have the Blaster virus or one of its variants?

I too have been having this issue. I know I do not have the blaster or any
of it's varients. I have scanned my system numerous times as well as
manually looked for the virus files. I orginally posted a few days ago about
it, but no answers. Here is my orginial post with all the details. Any help
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello,
I was infected with the blaster worm when it first hit. Once I discovered
it, I went through all the processes of removing it. (Mcafee scan, apply
security patch, checked registery to insure that the key it puts in was
deleted, etc). At the time, I have SP2 installed. After my system was
cleaned, I was still receiving errors about RPC service terminated
unexpectedly (Source: Service control Manager, EventID 7031). After the
error kicked off, I could not do the following while surfing:

Disconnect my dial up. (have to manually diable modem or pull phone line to
disconnect. Have to reboot to be able to dial up again)

Unable to cut and paste through IE. Java applets will not run. Cannot open
links in a new window.

I have since applied SP4 twice (once the express install, second time the
network install). I have applied all updates for win2k as well as updated IE
to latest version will all updates applied for those. Here is the current
error that stops the RPC service:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Application Popup
Event Category: None
Event ID: 26
Date: 8/31/2003
Time: 3:35:56 PM
User: N/A
Computer: MAINPC
Description:
Application popup: svchost.exe - Application Error : The instruction at
"0x77fcc641" referenced memory at "0x0000273d". The memory could not be
"read".

Click on OK to terminate the program

This will happen after a random amount of time (usually between 15 and 30
min of surfing the web).

I have searched the MS Knowledge base looking for answers. The closest thing
I have found instructed the user to call MS tech support, there may be a hot
fix for this problem. Since I do not want to incur charges for a simple fix
(nor spend an undetermined amount of time on the phone on hold) I was
wondering if anybody out there knows of anything to fix this issue?

Thanks for any help anybody can provide.

Danny,

Thanks for the response. This is my home desktop. Althrough I have a
network, the laptop is seldomly connected. The laptop is perfectly fine. I
have applied the security patch twice now. Once when I first discovered the
blaster worm and a second time after reinstalling SP4. I have also used
windows update to make sure that I now have all of the critical updates. I'm
just pulling my hair out trying to figure out why it's happening :) I hate
computer problems I cant fix.

I reread your original post again, but didn't see any mention of a firewall.
If you don't have one in place, something like Zone Alarm may be a good
option to test if this is an internal or external issue.

I've got a friend with XP and dialup and it took me a couple hours to get
blaster eradicated from that machine. Whether it's dialup or broadband,
it's still a connection.

Now that I think about it, I think there were some more specific issues with
svchost and dialup in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. You might want to try a
search there as well.

You can email me directly if you have other questions.

Good luck.
