svchost.exe errors?

I get a message box saying "svchost.exe has generated errors and will
be closed by Windows". I'm having difficulty loading a service pack
on to a fresh install of Win2000 pro. The hard drive was formatted
beforehand. ??
 
Okay, but could you tell us? We all learn from others mistakes, but you
have to tell us about them. Never know when someone else might have the
same problem. Or maybe it was one of those "Duh!" and slap head
problems that you don't to make public.
 
Instead of installing the service packs first (in Windows Update) I tried installing
all the other updates individually and restarting the computer after each one.
Labourious but it worked. Not that I'm sure it fixed it. I may have had/still have
some virus that generates a scchost file on Startup. It really slows the computer
down to a crawl. Then suddenly all is well. Bizarre. I will post if I find out
what is up.
