svchost.exe error message

I keep getting a Windows 2000 pro error message when using
internet explorer.

Windows is shutting down svchost.exe. You will need to
restart it manually.

First what is this svchost.exe, second how do I fix this.
After the error message appears internet explorer does not
work correctly - error messages appear in the status br on
clicking buttons on web pages and the button does not work!

Any ideas - this problem first appeared after a HDD
reformat and clean Win2000 pro install and recurred on a
second HDD reformat!

How about searching the messages in this newsgroup for those
containing 'svchost' in the subject?
 
it's not a symtom of an infection by the blaster worm .. it's a sympton of a
failed attempt to infect a vulnerable computer from an infected puter .. the
blaster worm guesses wat os is on the target computer and guesses wrongly
most of the time when it comes 2 a 2k system .. when it gueses wrongly
svchost falls over...
Those are symptoms of the Blaster worm. Are you sure your Norton is being
updated and functioning?

Hi Marc,

I have win2k Pro installed with SP 4. Still the error message "Svchost.exe has genereted errors and needs to be restarted keeps coming. HTML links don;t work. Cut an dpaste functions get disabled.

I have Norton 2002 anti virus with latest updates. No virus has been detected. I have not enabled iis also.

Would appreciate your advice.
