Hello,

Shortly after startup I'm getting a message that svchost.exe has errors and
is closing. I know you can sometimes have svchost running multiple times,
and after it closes I have two more svchost.exe still running.

Anyway these are some things I've so far found that do not work after this
error:

-Icons on desktop & in folders can not be moved.

-I can cut or copy, but can not paste. (can paste some text)

-Receive this error when opening a office document "This document could not
be registered. It will not be possible to create links from other documents
to this document."

-Search for files or folders will not open at all.

-When I open program files I get a blank folder, no 'show files' to the
left, nothing.

-Can not recover anything from the recycle bin.

-Drop down boxes in internet explorer do not work along with other things.

-Links from received e-mail in Outlook express do no work.

If anyone can please tell me what I've done and how to fix this, it would be
much appreciated.

Thanks,

Jason

And it will continue until you learn how to keep your system safe.

Try reading MS Security Bulletins, newspapers, CNN, _any_ A-V site,
_any_ security site, any software firewall site, this group's prior
posts, ....

Keywords: MSBlast Blaster worm RPC DCOM MS03-026 svchost ....

Hiya I work for the NHS iin IT support and so far I have about 20 pcs with
the same or very similar problems (who knows how many more to come!). I
downloaded and installed every single patch available for Win2k, plus
scanned for yet found no viruses, this has in most cases fixed the problems.
However the first one that I did last friday has now reverted back to how it
was....
I dont know yet how many are going to crap out but we have about 200-300
with win2k. There is a knowledge base article on the technet site part of
which which relates to this problem.
any ideas anyone?

The symptoms are of an RPC port attack (like blaster and others). If
the MS03-026 has been applied (and verified) and ports closed and all
Virus/Trojan scans (from more than one vendor) are clean, then maybe
it is something new/else I've yet the hear about. You say 823980 was
applied and verified... So perhaps I presume too much.

Well all the PCs that were sorted yesterday with MS fix for MS blaster virus
issues, have reverted back... It seems that our Corporate Trend
Installation rids the pc of the Virus only after it has done its damage.
We spent the day creating a batch file to copy a new pattern file from Trend
on user logon to the Domain to the PC to update Trend. Gotta say Trend
appears to be a bit Crap to say the least.
We shall see tomorrow whether thay have been reinfected again, another 10
have been infected today by the way. The good news is that the PCs with the
fix having been applied are much easier genberally to repair.
