I have a real annoying problem... Windows takes FOREVER
to recognize all my drives and network connections when I
start Windows explorer.

Windows has a similar delay whenever I start Internet
Explorer and try to type an address in the Address box
and click "GO". I think Windows also tries to look
briefly at all my drives/connections then too. Anyone
else ever had this problem?

I don't know if this is related... but I have FOUR
instances of svchost.exe running in Task Manager, and not
sure which ones to close (1 Local Svc, 1 Network Svc, and
2 Local). Arrgh!

yeah, i had that problem. turned out to be a virus, worm
type that i used norton to discover then had to go to the
website that SYMANTEC offered from links after
discovering the worm and offered a program to download
and run that involved turning off system restore and
removing registry entries that the worm caused. the
problem was solved after that. i recommend you backup
any files soon.
