Hi all,
After reading through a search of svchost threads I still can't fix my
problem.

On boot-up I get the message:

svchost.exe application error
The instruction at "0x664913bf" referenced memory at :0x00000000"
The memory could not be "written:
Click OK to terminate the program Click on cancel to debug the program

I've tried full virus scanning, I've tried system restore to three different
restore points, tried the problem wizard and I've tried the method in other
threads of turning off automatic updates, reboot, manually goto windows &
install updates then reboot - it didn't work either.

It has also done wierd things to my computer - the sound has gone on most
events, I get no sound on video tutorials, if I click on sounds and audio
devices in the control panel I can't adjust the device volume (all the
settings are a light grey shade, no click or movement, in sounds I can change
a program event's sound by clicking browse but can't play the sound (the play
triangle is light grey) on audio and voice tabe everything is locked (light
grey) and on hardware, it says all devices are working properly.

Also since this, the tool bar on the bottom of my desktop is light grey for
ages before going to the windows "dark blue" colour and there is now a light
blue box around each of the text under all my desktop icons instead of
matching the background colour.

I am running XP home edition on an early P4.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Bad RAM, or HD space? Try running Scandisk, reseat your RAM.

A third thought, though it doesn't really sound related to a bad write..
Click Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW, click OK. You may need to reboot
afterwards so damaged files will be replaced.

Yep, that worked!

The SFC /SCANNOW worked for a few days, then the computer started doing wierd
things again, sound themes changed, then Outlook express died this morning it
wouldn't load at all.

I managed to get to a windows screen eventually but there is no task bar
accross the bottom and none of the programs work when their icons are clicked
on.

I hit control Alt Delete to get the file - un then typed SFC ?SCANNOW so I
will see what happens.

I tried to re-install XP (home) but it asked for the administrator password,
and when I put in my login password (being an administrator user) it didn't
accept it.

If I try and reinstall XP it says the copy of XP is neweer than the CD I'm
about to install and it may not something something.....

When is the new OS coming out next year, should I upgrade my computer and
buy a new copy of XP (yes my current is original, came with the new PC) or
should I back up my documents and format my hard drive and use my existing
copy of XP until the new one comes out?

Thanks in advance

I cannot help but am posting in hopes of getting the answer. I just
installed svc.pk.3 update 3/05/2009 (I believe) and am getting this type of
error - svchost instruction at "0x664913bf" referenced memory at :0x00000000
,<blah-blah>. Services needing this program no longer work - no updates, no
help center, no system restore....anything needing scvhost.exe -k
<service.name>. HELP ME! ;)

svchost issues can be
caused by a variety of
things, including malware
or simply a dysfunctional
program.

what you might try is to
utilize the safe mode
environment

not only to examine the
integrity of the core
system files

but to also make
modifications so that
normal mode can
re configured.

boot into safe mode and
work in this environment
for a few hours and see
if you do or do not experience
the same problem.

you might then reboot
in safe mode w/networking
and also test run your system
in this environment but with
the internet browser.

then let us know how your
computer feels to you while
in safemode.
