I have a computer P4 128 MB SDRam running Windows 2000
Professional. A program named svchost runs and uses 100%
of CPU. This slows the computer down almost to the point
of uselessness. My Win XP machines do not seem to have
this problem. Anyone have any ideas on how to shut this
off, or repair the problem?

It looks like it could be a virus / spyware program that is causing this,
you cant kill svhost because it uses too many serivces. you should try to
pinpoint which process is causing svhost to run out of control, this can be
done with a process explorer like the one by sysinternals

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

also i would recommend you install an anti spyware program like ad-aware

hope this helps
