suspicious dll

hey all,

all of a sudden, my IE6 stopped working. to be specific,
every time i attempted to load it, it immediately
encountered an error (before even opening the browser
window) and dumped an error report (the usual kind that
can be sent to microsoft). i tried the various methods
of re-installing/repairing IE6 recommended on the support
site, but to no avail.

i then looked through the technical details of the error
report, and it stated that the module "winnz.dll" was
responsible for throwing the application exception. it
was residing in my Documents and Settings\<user-
name>\application data folder, under the folder by the
same name (winnz). i have two partitions on my machine,
both running XP, so i checked the other one where IE6
runs fine, and noticed the absence of this dll, along
with other files in the now-suspicious winnz folder,
which were:

dict.dat
keywords.dat
msiesh.dll
submit2.exe
winnz.dll

so i rebooted the partition with the problematic IE6 and
moved the suspicious winnz folder elsewhere, and that
resolved the problem.

i'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem
before, and if it is a kind of virus or perhaps
(probably) some kind of spyware gone awry. anyone?

Have you done a virus scan? Get adaware and scan your system as well (it's free). Get free firewall at zonelabs. Everybody is having this problem. Check around. It's getting to be an epidemic.

Good Luck

Hello,

I've also run into this problem - but the dll file was
called syser.dll with the same sub-files.... thanks for the
advice about moving the file - my IE6 is working fine now.
But does just "moving" the file remove the problem? If so
- where is the best place to move it to? (so far I've stuck
it into a temp file)

That's exactly the same problem I am currently having. I was on the web last night and then all off a suddent IE shutdown with the identical error message (report box). Everytime I try to start IE I get the same problem. After a few tries, it says that I should reboot my machine. So I did, but it didn't change anything. When I tried to debug it it said there was a problem with my system32.dll, no mention of winnz.dll.
