It has been recommended that I suspend the Firewall during the download of a
very sensitive software.

I found the Firewall, but how do I suspend it?

What risks are there if the suspension lasts say for 1hr?

Why?

I found the Firewall, but how do I suspend it?

Are you talking about the Vista one? - I see no reason to suspend that
for any download purposes.

Depends on your environment. If your machine is directly connected to
the net (has a public IP) I wouldn't risk it.

Thank you for posting, but you do not give me the answer I asked for. Since
I posted my question on a Vista Newsgroup, I must have been referring to a
Vista Firewall.

If you can give me the answer maybe you could also advise me how to restore
the Firewall to a full operating procedure after the suspension.

For your information the owners of the download advise the suspension of the
Antivirus and Firewall.

Maybe it wasn't my intention to give you the answer you wanted.
Thought about that?

Well, not necessarily, smart ass. Many mislead people run all kinds of
firewalls on Vista. Did you give it a thought that my question might
have impact on whether you actually need to suspend that or not?

I'm not going to do that until you give me a solid reason for
suspending your vista firewall in the first place.

That's common - because lot's of so called "security" stuff is too
crappy to deal with even legitimate stuff in a meaningful way - e.g.
by implementing all kinds of foolish pseudo-security functions.

Ask them if they have a concern with the Vista firewall specifically,
because if so you should maybe reconsider dealing with these "owners
of the download".

Start orb, help and support, type the word
firewall in the search box, then click on enter,
then click on turn Windows firewall on or off,
then read the help file.

If you get lost, come back for a walk through.

By the way, there is no good reason I can think
of for needing to do this merely to download a file.

Who recommended it and why? Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're
doing, that makes no sense to me.

Exactly what do you mean by "very sensitive software"?

Never, ever take any computer or network related advice from that
source again.

I found the Firewall, but how do I suspend it?

Until you tell us what specific firewall you're using, no one can
answer, even if they were so inclined.

What risks are there if the suspension lasts say for 1hr?

Almost immediately infestation of several nasty types of malware. it'd
takes minutes, at most, before you start seeing pop-ups, etc.

Hi Zygy,

Click Start and click Control Panel.
Click Security Center and then select Windows Firewall on the left side of
the window.
Click Change Settings and from there you can turn it off.

Other posters have told you the dangers of doing this so I won't repeat it.
Just remember to turn it back on as soon as you get your download.

Not necessarily. There are several 3rd party fiewalls tghat work with
Vista.

They're idiots. Don't use their software.

I know I certainly wouldn't install any software being offered by
someone who unnecessarily wants me to ignore the most basic elements of
computer security. I'd have to wonder just what sort of mischief
they're up to.

Zygy,

Although some people will recommend disabling antivirus during the
download and installation of software I see no need whatsoever to disable
your firewall. It is not a wise thing to do. You are asking for trouble if
you do so. I always leave my firewall and AV on when I download and install
software and I have never had a problem.
You would be doing everyone a favor if you would let us know what
software you are referring to and/or the name of the vendor so we can avoid
their products.

Come on Zygy,
you received quality advice, now return the favor and tell us about the
'highly sensitive software', please.

Thank you all for the very informative advice.

I found a way of disabling the Firewall by myself and must add that I the
owners who made the recommendation to Disable the Firewall owned up to a
mistake when I queried it after reading the postings! The corrected advice
was to Disable the Firewall during installation and not the download.

I am still glad that I made the posting. It is never too late to learn!

You're welcome!

No - wait - that one probably wasn't for me.....

Well......

The corrected advice was to Disable the Firewall during installation and
not the download.

Not to disappoint you - but that also is a very questionable
advice.....
I am still glad that I made the posting.

Whatever makes you happy....

For once, you're right....

Sorry, but that "corrected" advice still makes no sense.

He probably meant 'to disable the software firewall' or allow the 'very
sensitive software' to go through the fw and to allow it to download
related files.

Yes. That's how malware often works.

You've posted this question before and received the same answers. You
have been asked to reveal the name of the "sensitive" software but you
refuse to do so.
