Susan, thank you for the reasons why the add-in to word
should be removed. I never use any of the things it's
supposed to be there for, and with all the problems it can
and has caused that you listed, I WANT to remove it.

I just want to do it safely. I can't be without the
computer if something else goes wrong.

Can you please tell me how to safely remove the MS add-in
for Word? Do I just go to the control panel add remove and
press remove? or does MS tell me, like with removing the
works suite, that i'm going to need the CD to do it? Have
YOU ever removed it?

I'm really glad you're out there to help. You've been a
great help to me so far. I'll wait till you answer before
I do anything...and if there's some MS paper i should read
before removing the add in, or any contradictions in how
MS says to do it and you say to do it, perhaps you can
point me to those instructions. but i prefer you writing
and telling me, you seem to know how to say things clearly
and simply so that even I can understand them. so very
many thanks.

JLK,

Suzanne, not Susan. She is great. In general, however, it is much better
*not* to change the subject line with every post--ideally one problem should
all stay under the same thread, so people can click on sort by subject and
see the entire progress of the discussion, especially when searching the
archives later. There might be someone out there with the same problems,
who would also benefit from Suzanne's excellent advice, but you have made it
impossible for them to simply review what was told you, and they will have
to ask and be answered all over again, while Suzanne could be better
spending that time giving superb answers to new questions.

JLK,

One other tip. Don't take this as whining, and I don't necessarily
speak for Suzanne, but: I've always felt it presumptuous to place
an MVP's name in the subject line. It implies that said MVP is
being royally summoned, that he/she has been formally assigned as
your personal assistant, obligated to jump when you call.

We mostly all have day jobs (MVPs aren't paid anything). Posting
here isn't necessarily shouting into the great purple void, but
anyone -- MVP or not -- can and should feel free to offer help,
so it's counterproductive (and, as I say, a little presumptuous)
to aim your question at just one person.

first, it was never my intention to be presume on Susan...)
she signs her posts and articles "susan h. barnhill" so
how would i know it's 'suzanne.')i only addressed that to
her since she writes so clearly and has helped me in plain
english...she's an excellent writer. clear, concise, and
not at all afraid to say she doesn't know something or
hasn't done something herself...such as unistalling
works... second, thank you for the tips on the newgroup
etiqutte and replying the same thread. i didn't know
people followed these problems in that way since the
number of messages that are posted here soon bury the
thread to begin with, but i will do as requested from here
on in....and it makes sense that others can profit from a
single subject being worked through on a thread; i just
didn't know that it was practical....and MOST importantly,
thank you, Graham, for answering my question and pointing
me to the MS article about removing the add-in for Word.
Thank you very much.

You will note that the signature on this post, as well as the From name you
would see in Outlook Express, is "Suzanne S. Barnhill." I have never used
any other signature. That being the case, I will leave it to susan h.
barnhill to answer your questions.

Note, too, that it is much easier to follow threads in a proper newsreader
(such as Outlook Express) than through the Microsoft Communities Web portal
(which, quite frankly, sucks, though we're told it will soon be improved
somewhat).

After reading the article Graham kindly pointed me to, I'm
unsure of two things. While there is no mention of needing
the disk again to remove the ADD IN, can I be sure that
the ADD IN that is listed in ADD REMOVE "shipped" with
windows, in other words, i guess from the disk I have, and
NOT from a MS critical update? (sorry for my ignorance and
nervousness here, but if you only knew the problems I've
been working through.)The second thing I'm not sure about
comes from this quote from the article about removing the
ADD IN-- "NOTE: This removes all Works templates and tasks
from the Works Task Launcher and removes Works
enhancements from Word." What does that mean to the
performance and functionality of Word, which I really use
a lot. Will my documents change or be altered in any way
as a result of this. I'm sorry to be so CAUTIOUS but, as I
said, if you only knew....Thank you and any advice would
be really appreciated....

The adde-in is installed with Works. It is not part of any critical updates.
Its removal will not impair the use of Word, and should improve it by not
having its bug laden presence interfering with Word's operation. The only
thing you lose is the Works Task launcher and the ability to merge directly
from Works databases, but as this doesn't work very well it will be no great
loss. Just go ahead and uninstall it.
