hi!

My sus was installed on a w2k server. The GPOs are successfully
applied to all the PCs except one winxp PC. I've checked through
the gpresult output, the GPOs are applied but the patches are not
installed on that WinXP. Any idea how i can check and solve this
problem? Thks!

Is the XP machine at least Service Pack 1?

For some reason, I can't get my XP machines to get the SUS patches if I
deploy a computer with plain 'ole XP

Hi

From

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/sus/susfaq.mspx

Q. Which client operating systems does SUS support?

A. The Automatic Updates component is supported on Windows 2000 Service Pack
2 (SP2) and later operating systems.

.. If you are running Windows 2000 SP2 (either Professional or Server family)
or Windows XP RTM, you will need to install the Automatic Updates component
using the appropriate language-specific MSI file.

.. If you are running Windows 2000 SP3 or later, Windows XP SP1 or later, or
Windows Server 2003, the Automatic Updates component comes with the
operating system, so there is no need to install the client MSI file.

Kind regards

But how do you get the automatic update to pull from the local SUS, and not the
MS Windows Update Site?

Use GP

Specify intranet Microsoft update service locationSetting Path:
Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows
Update

Policy Setting
Configure Automatic Updates Enabled
Configure automatic updating: 4 - Auto download and schedule the install
The following settings are only required
and applicable if 4 is selected.
Scheduled install day: 0 - Every day
Scheduled install time: 08:00

Policy Setting
Specify intranet Microsoft update service location Enabled
Set the intranet update service for detecting updates:
http://yourserver.yourdomain.local
Set the intranet statistics server: http://yourserver.yourdomain.local

These settings use my local server for updates and autoupdate at 8am each day.

Hope that helps
Thanks

That is how I had it set up before SP2. Today. It stopped and started the
update program when I rebooted the client computer. Watching the lights on the
modem, it was pretty clear that it went out to the internet windows update site
and pulled down the two items it installed.

So, the question remains, How do I force that turkey update center on the client
computer to look for the updates on the intranet. I have the settings you
mentioned extent on the client computer. The keys are in the HKLM -> Software
-> Policies -> Microsoft -> Windows -> AU key. However, the windows update
center is in HKLM -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion ->
WindowsUpdate -> Auto Update. There is a key that says the SUS version is 1,
but it does not have a key there to say where to find the SUS server updates.
What more does it need in the Auto Update key?

Hi

Perhaps examine a user environment debug log to determine why the
application of the policy may be failing:

Thanks Mark. I've grabbed up the KB article and will see what I can do
with it.
