after installing SUS, when directed to admin page, I
cannot log in - get rediredcted to 500 error page. I
assume I have something missing from dns preventing me
from seeing local pages, but get same result with IP
address - but at least I see the login screen this way.

Can you reach ANYthing (other web pages, ping, etc.) on
that Server by NAME?

If so, it's not a DNS issue.

If not, can you reach it by ADDRESS? If not, then it is not
a DNS issue (solely) as you have an IP problem (and/or other
services). If address works, and name fails this is a general
indication of a DNS (or other name) resolution error.

Can you reach the WEB server root, or home? If so it is
not the web server itself.

Is the Web server, and site "started"?

Show the actual URL you are attempting to access...

both by IP and by name. after installing SUS, I am
sup0posed to configure it at http://harley/susadmin
(harley is our server). It appears that the installation
may be conflicting with MS Project Server as they both
installed to the default web site.

The site is started, I can ping and access other things
both by IP and by name.

Then you don't have a DNS or network (connectivity)
problem.

Then my guess is your NetBIOS name resolution is not
setup correctly.

Are you own the same network segment (almost certainly
"no")? If not, do you have a WINS server setup? (Almost
certainly no.

If using multiple segment you need WINS server(s).

No. You can have multiple sites on a single server, but SUS
isn't even a separate "site" but rather a subarea of the main site.

You might manage to mess it up with IP specific sites but you
would probably have to work at it.

Check you NetBIOS name resolution and also try the DNS
name (just for checking as both names should really work):

server.harley.com/susadmin (or whatever DNS name your server
uses -- the one that worked for "ping")
