i have a problem where i cannot get the clients to pull
from the sus server is their any way that it can be done
without messing sround with the registery like the
windowsupdate.microsoft.com site, also when i use a gpo
and configure it like the deployment guide it still wont
pull help !!!

All of the client machines are windows 2000 sp4 and some
xp sp1. i have left the client running for days now
thinking that the autoupdate will occour over a 24 hour
period but still no i am at a loss. also from the sus
conect can i make a portable version of the updates
required so i can take then to standalone machines to
update via cd??

check two things.
First on your update server go to c:\winnt\system32\logfiles\w3svc2\ and
look the the most recent log file and see that it says. It'll tell you what
the error might be. Also check on your person device
c:\winnt\windowsupdate.log file and see that they say. then come back and
tell us what you saw so we can further see how to resolve it

WindowsUpdate Log is empty then w3svc1 log dir has
nothing of interest just the updates that i did and
standard intranet functions
i have the clients in the local admins group so the
following will not apply

Microsoft Quote@
"If the end user is part of the local administrators
group, he or she will be able to interact with Automatic
Updates (AU) by initiating downloads or installs. If the
end user is not part of the local administrators group,
he or she will not be able to interact with AU and will
not see the AU balloon or tray icon. For end users who
are not local administrators, the only way that AU will
properly update their machine is if scheduled installs
are set."

I have searched through
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/sus/susfaq.ms
px
but it is useless i cannot get my clents to work and no
loggs or error messages occour, also the force update
wont work i know this is because i am using a gpo but
when i first started i was not but is didnt work
hlp this is getting pointless you get software to make
live better but it has taken so dam long to setup i could
do it manualy in half the time and still be able to have
plenty of coffee come on i realy need some good help asap
i have too many PC to deal with

How did you configure your clients?
With gpedit.msc?

From the start menu go to run and enter "gpedit.msc"
This will open the group policy editor
From the Local Computer Policy
Computer Configuration
Right click Administrative Templates. Then left
click "Add/Remove Templates"
Then click the Add button
Select the wuau.adm template.
Next close the Add/Remove Templates windows.
Double click Windows Components folder
then, double click Windows update folder.
Double click "Configure Automatic Updates"
Select "Enabled"
Choose how you want automatic updating to work:
2 = Notify for download and install
3 = Auto download and notify for install
4 = Auto download and schedule to install
If you choose 4 then schedule the install time
Click the Next Policy button
"Specify intranet Microsoft update service location"
Choose "Enabled"
Set the intranet update service for detecting updates
http://susserver
Set the intranet statistics server
http://susserver
click Next Policy and choose
"Not configured" for "Reschedule Automatic Updates
scheduled installations"
Click Next Policy
"No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates
installations"
choose "Enabled" if you don't want the computer to reboot
automatically
or "Not configured" if you want it to reboot.

If you have done that you should see it trying to update
in the "Windows update.log"
If you see that it tried to update but never downloads or
installs updates then check the austate in the registry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio
n\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update

0 Initial 24 hour timeout (the AU wizard does not run
until 24 hours after it first detects an Internet
connection)
1 Waiting for user to run AU wizard
2 Detect pending
3 Download pending (waiting for user to accept pre-
download prompt)
4 Download in progress
5 Install pending
6 Install complete
7 Disabled (Adoptions will also be set to a value of 0x1)
8 Reboot pending (updates that require a reboot were
installed but the reboot was declined - AU will not do
anything until the reboot occurs and this value is
cleared)

If it is set to 2 you can there is not a LastWaitTimeout
then restart the automatic update service from the
services applet. Then check the "windows update.log"
later that day.
