I know of some pricey packages to help maintain privacy on the internet, but
what about freeware versions?

Privacy from -what-, or -whom-?

There are many different solutions, according to what you want to
accomplish, or the scrutiny that you may try to evade. ;-)

Do a search for {privacy} and you will find several newsgroups, if your
news server carries them.

Due to technical restrictions, that is hard:
Imagine the internet to be a catalogue, the webpages to be delivery
services. If you are completely anonym, without any delivery adress,
they cannot deliver you anything.

An "anonymiser" webpage is like a "send it to my PO box" service, in
this example. They bring it to a place where you pick it up.

Oh, and could you please switch this off?
It does not help anything, because some viri imitate it and it thus only
wastes space in the best case. (In the worst case, it makes somebody

anonymizer is just one form of 'proxy'...which means you go through them
to reach other sites, and their IP address is the one that gets seen
when you surf. Alternatives usually involve the added work of finding
other 'proxies' that will allow you to reach the rest of the web through
them. They come and go...do a search for 'proxy server' and you will
find lists...(which change, and often require new searches)
