Surely I am overlooking an obvious solution but...

for sanity sake, I am humbly asking for assistance here.

I have had a home network set up for over 3 years with never a problem like
this.

3 desktops connected to a Linksys router to a cable modem.
All lights blinking and functioning normally.

Problem is no internet connectivity. Cannot connect to the router setup at
192.168.1.1

If I take the router out of the picture and plug directly into my PC,
everything works fine on my PC only of course. So I assumed the router went
south. Replaced with another spare Linksys router but same problem exists.

Tried resetting both router and modem...no go.
Tried turning off Norton firewall...no go
No virus detected.
No spyware/adware detected.

Computer is an HP a720n running XP Home.

Is there some Windows service that maybe is not running?

What else might I try?

Thanks

Bob

You don't say how you're connecting - I'd assume with IE - nor what the
symptoms are. Does the problem affect all 3 machines? Has the network
ever worked properly, or has it failed?

Can you ping the router - by number not name? Have you checked *all* the
IP settings on the PCs (address, netmask, gateway, anything else you
notice). If you can ping the router, try from a command window 'telnet
192.168.1.1 80' (or whatever port the linksys uses) and see if that
connects. Have you checked the list of exceptions for any proxy set up
for IE (the router must be there)?

Does the linksys have the correct netmask for your LAN (I know some kit
has surprising shortcomings in this area)?

Try running 'netstat -rn' from the command window - check if the output
looks reasonable. Do this with and without the router connected, and
make sure you can account for any differences.

If all that looks reasonable, maybe try running the windows version of
tcpdump (windump???) and see what the network traffic looks like. Maybe
find a non-windows machine which will have more tools - eg try a simpler
browser (lynx perhaps: don't know if an XP version exists).

Attempting to connect with IE or Firefox.
The primary symptom is no internet or network connection although the
network shows all cables plugged and all lights on router and modem are
working properly.
I have had this network up and running for quite some time with only
occasional network loss due to spyware clogging up the kids desktops and
haveing to reset the cable modem from time to time.

Ill try out your suggestions later on after I am able to put my paintbrush
down for awhile. lol Thanks!

Tried a 3rd verified working router and it worked.
Not the first time I have replaced a non-working part with another
non-working part. lol
Im gonna try upgrading the firmware in the non-working router to see if it
will reset itself back to default settings of some sort.
Thanks

You do know if you hold the reset button in for 10-15 seconds, the router
resets to default?

If you are using WinXP SP2 you might check to see if you have the Windows
firewall running.
