Supported file types for import into MM

Can I use mpeg movie clips from a digital camera (Sony dsc-90) to import into
movie maker to put together into a movie?
 
I works sometimes but mostly it would give you grieve later on. Its best to
convert it to a suitable AVI using VirtualDubMod.
