Is there any way to disable the inane (in my humble view) bubble reminders
that seem keen to tell me that I've just pressed a shortcut button, or that
my modem is connected, etc, etc? I wouldn't mind but they seem to stay
there until you click on the 'x' to remove them.

Bill Gates has spent millions of his "hard earned" dollars to incorporate
this feature in WindowsXP, and "YOU DON'T LIKE IT?" You're a sorry ...
But...he has also provided a way to do without it, go here:
Open Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View tab>Advanced Settings>
Scroll all the way to the bottom and uncheck "Show Pop-up description, etc."
Click Apply and OK.

You need to disable balloon tips. Take your pick from the sites
listed here:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=disable+balloon+tips+in+windows+xp

I use TweakUI -> Taskbar and Start Menu -> uncheck Enable
balloon tips.
TweakUI can be downloaded from this site:
Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

If you'd rather edit the registry:

I'll try and live with my guilt!

Have tried what you suggest and re-started Windows but has had no effect.

Thanks for the advice.

I followed the instructions to amend the Registry entry to the letter but
this has had no effect. Have also downloaded TweakUI successfully but, at
the risk of seeming really dim, how do I now run it? It doesn't appear
anywhere (that I can see) in the programme list, or the desktop or the
system tray!

After you edited the registry did you log off and log back on?

TweakUI not only needs to be downloaded it has to be installed
on your computer. Double click the file you downloaded to begin
the installation.
After you install TweakUI you should see a new entry on your
Start menu for "Powertoys for Windows XP". TweakUI should be
accessible there.
If you still don't find it listed, go to Start -> Run and enter
tweakui.exe in the Open box and click OK.
Once the program starts, click on "Taskbar and Start Menu".
Remove the check mark from the box next to "Enable balloon
tips".

If you still can't disable balloon tips, go to this web site
and download the registry fix from line 11, left hand column,
"Disable Balloon Tips".

Remember to log off and back on after you run the registry fix.

Hmmmm ...

Yes, I did re-start.

When I downloaded TweakUI it asked whether I wanted to install it and the
wizard took me through this. When I couldn't find it I tried to download
again only to be told that it was already installed. I didn't note where
the file was being stored. Now using 'run' doesn't locate the .exe file and
neither does a search of all files.

Not sure I can be bothered, annoying as these things are!!

Thanks anyway!

Terry...don't give up, its simple. Tweak is neat. If its already installed
it should be listed in start/programs as "power toys for windows xp". If
it's not then you need to reinstall it. The download is called
"tweakuipowertoysetup.exe". Just search "Tweak" to see if you have it, if
not re-download it and save it someplace (my documents or wherever). Then
double click it. There's nothing to it. Try again - don't give up - only
give up on the hard stuff. It will get rid of those damn balloon tips,
without you having to mess with the registry, plus it has some other neat
stuff also. I got rid of the damn things once, and then put them back for
other reasons (i.e., they may be useful - lol), and have learned to live
with them :-):-) ...Pete

Thanks Pete.

PowerToys is actually shown on the Programme menu but the only item on the
sub menu is the 'Read Me' file - nothing else.

Terry...Mine just says Tweakui. Did you check add/remove programs in
control panel to see if tweak is in there (if it is delete it). Did you
search Tweak and see if you have the download executable I mentioned below.
If you have it, delete it and redownload it again, and try again as I
mentioned below. Can't think of anything else. If you search "tweak"
windows should tell you where at least "some" of it is. Tweakui.exe resides
in c:\windows\system32...Pete

Thanks Pete - I now have it! On a quick glance (it's late!) I don't see
any mention of the balloon windows?

In the left hand column click on "Taskbar and Start Menu".
That should result in a Setting box being displayed in the
right hand pane.
Remove the check mark from the box next to "Enable balloon
tips".
Click OK.

It will look something like this:

Good luck

Terry...I had trouble finding it at first also. Just follow Nepatsfan's
instructions and enjoy your missing balloons :-) . Take care...Pete
